Join Viewfinder for a fun and unique photography day-trip to the hilly farmlands near Waldstatt (in Appenzell), where the New Year is still celebrated according to the Julian calendar (on January 13th). We’ll take you to the best spots to photograph the colorful (and somewhat bizarre) costumes worn by the “Silvesterchläuse” as they march from house to house carolling and ringing in the new year.

I have participated twice on photography day trips with Viewfinder. The detailed preparation and their amazing experience and enthusiasm make those days the perfect opportunity for seeing amazing things and learning great photography tips and tricks while you are at it. Thank you!
Appenzell, Switzerland – near Waldstatt and Urnäsch.
Provided by Viewfinder. We will rendezvous at the Zurich HB in the short-term parking/pickup area (Museumstrasse 1). Departure is at 08:00, returning to Zurich at 16:30.
This trip is conducted in English.
Open to all levels. Foundational photography skills, such as those covered in Viewfinder’s popular Digital Photography 1-2-3 Course are recommended.
We recommend a dSLR type camera for this outing. Zoom lenses which cover a range of focal lengths from wide angle to mid-telephoto will be very handy. For example 24-120mm or 18-200mm, or a combination of two or more lenses which allow you to shoot subjects near and far would also work well. Solid footwear is a must. Be aware of weather conditions and dress appropriately. Warm layers, hat and gloves are must-haves on this trip.
Viewfinder provides a sack lunch (sandwich, chips, fruit & water). Select the sandwich of your choice during registration/checkout.
Minimum of 5 participants, Maximum of 10.

Registration closes three days before event.
This event takes place rain or shine.
Our group will rendezvous at the Zurich HB and drive to Appenzell in the Viewfinder van. Upon arriving in Appenzell your instructor will present some tips on composition and camera settings (via a short iPad lesson) before we start pursuing our subjects on foot. Because the Alter Silvester event is quite dynamic, we’ll likely visit multiple locations looking for great subjects and ideal backgrounds as the costumed participants march from rural village to village.
Participants will have sack lunches with them (provided by Viewfinder) and are welcome to eat anytime they wish. In year’s past we’ve found a sunny spot near the Viewfinder van to regroup and eat our sandwiches. Our group will spend the day photographing around two or three locations, so don’t wander to far if you’d like to get help with your camera settings. We’ll depart back to Zurich in the late afternoon, arriving at the Zurich HB by ca. 16:30.
