Viewfinder Center Alpabfahrt photography trip

The annual “Alpabfahrt” (cows descending from the summer alpine pastures) is a Swiss photography spectacle not to be missed! The Autumn farming ritual can be photographed in many places around Switzerland, but it’s tricky to know when and where to go for the best costumes and action. Join Viewfinder on a visit to one of Switzerland’s best Alpabfahrt events. Our instructors will provide you with camera tips and composition pointers that give you the advantage. Grab your camera gear and hiking shoes. This is your chance to capture fantastic cultural photos in the Swiss countryside!

Viewfinder Center Alpabfahrt photography trip
cow descent in Appenzell

We will head to the Appenzell region.

The Viewfinder van will pickup and drop off at the Zurich HB, departing at 07:30 and returning by ca. 17:00.

This trip is conducted in English but both trip leaders also speak German/Swiss German.

Open to all levels. Foundational photography skills, such as those covered in Viewfinder’s popular Digital Photography 1-2-3 Course are recommended.

We recommend either a digital SLR or mirrorless type camera. Medium length zoom lenses, such as a 24-70mm (for full-format cameras) or an 18-55mm zoom (for cropped format cameras) will be particularly handy for shooting the action. A medium telephoto lens or telephoto zoom, such as a 70-200mm or 70-300mm will come in handy for tighter shots from a distance. We’ll mostly be on paved roads, so hard core hiking gear isn’t necessary, but solid footwear and a jacket are must-haves.

Viewfinder will provide a sack lunch (sandwich, chips, apple, chocolate bar & water). Choose a sandwich during registration.

Minimum of 5 participants, Maximum of 10

Matt & Dagmar Anderson

Registration closes three days before event.

If weather forces an event cancellation, we will contact participants as soon as possible. All registration fees will be refunded or (if you prefer) a credit can be issued for a future Viewfinder event.

Our group will rendezvous at the Zurich HB and drive to Appenzell in the Viewfinder van. Upon arriving in Appenzell we’ll present some tips on composition and camera settings (via a short iPad lesson) before we start pursuing our subjects on foot. Because the farmers travel from the hilly high country to the farming communities down valley, we’ll likely be walking with them for a while, staying out ahead of the farmers and animals, looking for ideal backgrounds as they meander down valley on closed country roads.

We’ll keep our sack lunches with us (provided by Viewfinder) to remain flexible at lunchtime. Stick close to your instructor if you’d like to get further help with your settings. We’ll depart in the late afternoon, returning to the Zurich HB at ca. 17:00.

Viewfinder Center photography instructor Matt Anderson

Matt Anderson

Matt Anderson manages the Viewfinder Center and shoots commercial, editorial and private assignments when he’s not busy teaching. As a former newspaper photojournalist, he’s comfortable photographing a variety of subjects from sporting events and news reportage to portraits and product photography. Matt takes pleasure in seeking out interesting photography trips and creating fun learning experiences for other photographers.

Viewfinder Center co-manager Dagmar Anderson

Viewfinder Center’s office maven; Dagmar Anderson, can be found working away diligently behind the scenes – where she assists with planning, instructor coordination and student inquiries at Viewfinder. Dagmar is a “professional traveler” with chronically itchy feet who enjoys exploring new countries, cultures and cuisine as often as she can. Dagmar’s long experience as a professional nurse in Switzerland makes her a great resource on longer, more remote trips. She’s helped her husband Matt out of trouble on more than one occasion!
